Chimney Sweep & Repair in Woodbridge, CT
Cleaning, inspection and repair for Woodbridge homes, from the hills of central Woodbridge to the Flats below West Rock. Camera and drone photos, then a written price.
Sunday to Friday
A Class Chimney sweeps, inspects and repairs chimneys anywhere in Woodbridge, from the hilly center of town to the Flats near the New Haven line. Tall chimneys on wooded lots mostly suffer from water, debris and animals, so every visit includes a look at the cap, crown and flue. Seeing the chimney and pricing it in writing costs you nothing.

Hills, woods and the Flats
Woodbridge has two kinds of terrain. Central Woodbridge occupies the hilly western side of town, while the Flats to the east sit in the West River valley below West Rock ridge, close to New Haven’s Westville. The area was first known as Amity, a name that lives on in the regional school district, and the Woodbridge Green at the town center is a National Register historic district.
Most of the housing came later. The population grew sharply between 1950 and 1970, and zoning has kept the town almost entirely single-family, so many homes are mid-century or newer and sit on generous, tree-covered lots. That setting is pleasant to live in and hard on a chimney, because shade, leaves and wind all take a toll.
What a wooded hillside lot does to a chimney
Leaves and twigs
An uncapped flue collects debris every fall, and a nest or leaf plug can choke the draft. A stainless cap with mesh keeps it out; see our chimney caps and chase covers page.
Animals
Squirrels, raccoons and birds treat an open flue as shelter. If something is already living inside, read how to get animals out of a chimney before you try anything.
Shade and moss
Masonry that rarely sees sun stays damp longer. Damp brick and mortar are the parts that crack and flake when the water inside them freezes.
Overhanging limbs
Branches that brush the chimney scrape the cap and drop debris, and a limb that falls in a storm can crack the crown. Trimming trees back from the roof is worth doing before winter.
Exposure on high ground
A tall chimney on a hilltop takes the full force of wind-driven rain in a nor’easter, which pushes water into weak joints and tired flashing.

Larger homes, more flues
Bigger colonials and contemporaries often have a chimney with two or three flues: one or two for fireplaces and a separate one for the furnace or boiler. Each flue is its own system and needs its own inspection. A clean living-room fireplace says nothing about the condition of the heating flue right next to it.
When a heating system is replaced, the flue it vents into should be checked for size and condition, because newer, more efficient appliances can produce cooler, wetter exhaust. We handle the chimney side, including stainless-steel relining, while the appliance itself stays with your licensed heating technician.
Recent work: a partial chimney rebuild
The same chimney, during and after the work. The damaged top courses come down with the roof covered in tarps, then the top is rebuilt and finished with a new crown.

Which flue needs what
If your chimney has several flues, it helps to know what each one usually needs. This table is a starting point; the inspection decides. Stoves and inserts have their own page on wood stove chimney service.
| Flue serves | Routine care | Common repair |
|---|---|---|
| Wood-burning fireplace | Sweep and Level 1 inspection each year you use it | Damper, smoke chamber, crown and cap |
| Oil furnace or boiler | Yearly check for soot, scale and blockage | Stainless relining when tiles fail |
| Gas furnace, boiler or water heater | Periodic inspection for blockage and liner wear | Correctly sized liner after an appliance change |
| Wood stove or insert | Sweeping at least once per heating season | Liner replacement or reconnection |
| Flue no longer in use | Cap it, and check it during other visits | Seal at the top, or remove the stack above the roof |
When to call rather than wait
Book a visit if any of these sound familiar:
- You hear scratching or chirping inside the chimney
- The fireplace smells like an old campfire on humid summer days
- Smoke rolls into the room when you light a fire, even with the damper open
- A stain appears on the ceiling or wall next to the chimney after heavy rain
- Pieces of mortar, brick or tile show up in the firebox or at the base of the chimney
- A tree limb has hit the chimney or the roof around it
- You recently bought the house and do not know when the chimney was last inspected
Chimney swifts are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so a nesting family cannot be removed. The right move is to wait until they migrate south in the fall, then sweep and cap the flue. Our chimney swifts guide explains the timing.
