How Pratt & Whitney shaped East Hartford’s houses
East Hartford was already shifting from farm town to suburb when its Main Street area developed between about 1890 and 1945. Then, when Pratt & Whitney moved its engine production here in 1929, the town changed fast. Factory jobs multiplied during World War II, and after the war the population nearly doubled again between 1950 and 1970.
Mayberry Village went up in 1941 to house defense workers, first as multi-unit buildings and later with single and duplex homes, and the units were offered for sale to their residents in 1956. Across the rest of town, including the older villages of Burnside and Hockanum, you will find a mix of older houses and the modest capes, ranches and two-families typical of postwar Connecticut.
Many of those postwar chimneys are short, plain brick stacks serving a boiler or furnace and a water heater, sometimes with a fireplace flue alongside. They are not complicated, but after 60 to 80 years the crown, the cap and the flashing are usually worn.

Cap or crown? Knowing which one you need
People mix these up all the time. The cap is the metal hood with mesh sides that sits over the flue; it keeps rain, leaves and animals out. The crown is the concrete or mortar slab covering the top of the brick, and its job is to shed water away from the masonry.
On a short postwar chimney, both take a beating. A crown troweled from leftover mortar decades ago cracks, and water runs straight down into the brick. If you can see cracks or missing pieces at the top, chimney crown repair comes first; if the flue is open to the sky, add a cap. Our article on the chimney cap vs. chimney crown explains the difference in more depth.
Recent work: a partial chimney rebuild
The same chimney, during and after the work. The damaged top courses come down with the roof covered in tarps, then the top is rebuilt and finished with a new crown.

A five-minute check from the yard
Use binoculars from the ground rather than climbing up. Look for:
- A cap that is missing, bent or streaked with rust
- Cracks or missing chunks on the crown
- Mortar joints sitting deeper than the brick faces
- Bricks with their faces flaked off, mostly near the top
- Flashing that has lifted, or thick caulk smeared at the roof line
- Dark staining down one side of the chimney
- A chimney that does not look straight against the roof
When the chimney is no longer doing anything
Plenty of East Hartford houses have had their heating replaced over the years, and some newer furnaces and boilers vent out through a side wall instead of the chimney. If the fireplace is not used either, the chimney may now be doing nothing at all except soaking up rain.
There are three sensible choices: keep it capped and maintained, close it off properly at the top, or take it down below the roofline. Removing the part above the roof and patching the roof runs about $1,500 to $5,000+ as a ballpark. Our page on chimney removal explains the process, and what to do with an unused chimney compares the options.
Before deciding, confirm that nothing, including the water heater, still vents into it.
Our process, start to finish
You call or fill in the callback form and describe what you have noticed. We set up a visit, and there is no charge for it.
A technician checks the chimney from the roof and inside the house, runs a camera into the flue if something looks off, and photographs it all. You get the photos and an itemized, written price, so you can fix the urgent item now and plan the rest. If we find something unsafe, such as a blocked heating flue, we tell you on the spot rather than waiting for the written estimate. Work starts only after you approve it, and we leave the house as clean as we found it.
Booking from East Hartford
Phone (203) 779-6787 or send us a callback request; we are open Sunday through Thursday and Friday until 2:30 PM. If the house is a duplex or two-family, let us know so we can plan to look at the flues for both units. We also work in Manchester, Glastonbury and South Windsor, the towns along East Hartford’s borders, and across the river in Hartford.
