Chimney Sweep & Repair in Avon, CT
Cleaning, inspections, caps and chase repairs for Avon homes, from older farmhouses to newer colonials on wooded lots around Huckleberry Hill and Woodford Hill.
Sunday to Friday
A Class Chimney sweeps, inspects and repairs both brick chimneys and factory-built fireplace chimneys in Avon. If your house was built in the last few decades, the fireplace may sit inside a sided chase rather than a masonry chimney, and it needs different checks. The visit and written estimate are free; call or request a callback.

From farm town to suburb: what that means for Avon chimneys
Avon was a farming town for most of its history, part of Farmington until it became its own town in 1830. The Farmington Canal arrived in 1828, but the industry people hoped it would bring never really came. Instead, Avon grew into a suburb after World War II, and its population more than doubled between 1960 and 1990.
So most Avon houses are 20th-century or newer, with a smaller number of older farmhouses. Many sit on hillside or wooded lots, around Huckleberry Hill, Woodford Hill and the Buckingham neighborhood among other places, while West Avon occupies the flatter middle of town.
Two kinds of chimney come with that history. Postwar houses usually have a brick chimney with clay tile liners. Many newer houses have a factory-built fireplace whose metal flue runs up inside a framed chase covered in siding and topped with a metal chase cover. The older farmhouses are a third case: a large chimney patched over generations, where a camera inspection shows what sits behind the patches.
Brick chimney or factory-built chase? What to check
Look at the chimney from the yard. Brick or stone all the way up means masonry. Siding up the outside wall with a metal top means a chase around a factory-built flue. If you are still unsure, the fireplace’s metal label plate, usually found inside the opening or behind the lower grille, names the maker and model.
| Check | Masonry chimney | Factory-built (prefab) chase |
|---|---|---|
| What wears out first | Crown, mortar joints, flashing | Chase cover rusts, sags and holds water |
| Warning signs | Spalled brick, white stains, leaks beside the chimney | Rust streaks on the siding, water in the firebox, swollen trim |
| Key rule | Liner intact and sized for what burns below | Only parts listed for that fireplace model |
| Typical fixes (ballpark) | Crown $200–$1,200; cap $150–$600 | Chase cover replacement $400–$1,200 |

Trees, ridges and what lands in the flue
Avon is framed by the Metacomet Ridge, with Avon Mountain and Talcott Mountain on the east side, and by the Farmington River along the west. Plenty of houses here stand among tall trees, and that brings leaves, twigs and animals to the top of the chimney.
Squirrels, raccoons and birds look for a sheltered opening, and an uncapped flue is an easy one. If you hear scratching or chirping, read how to get birds and animals out of a chimney before lighting anything. Chimney swifts are federally protected while nesting and must be left until they migrate in the fall.
A stainless cap with mesh, about $150–$600 as a ballpark, is the long-term answer; see our chimney caps and covers page. Branches hanging over the roof also drop debris on the crown and keep the shingles around the chimney damp, so trimming them back is worth doing.
If you burn wood from your own lot, split it and stack it under cover for at least six months to a year before burning. Green wood smolders, and it leaves far more creosote in the flue than seasoned wood does.
Recent work: a partial chimney rebuild
The same chimney, during and after the work. The damaged top courses come down with the roof covered in tarps, then the top is rebuilt and finished with a new crown.

Matching the service to the fireplace
Wood-burning fireplaces
An annual sweep with a Level 1 inspection, about $150–$350 as a ballpark, keeps creosote down and catches damage early.
Gas fireplaces and gas logs
No soot, but the flue still has to be clear and intact. See gas fireplace chimney inspection; valves and burners belong to a licensed gas technician.
Heating flues
Oil or gas boilers often vent through the chimney. We inspect, clean and reline that flue; your heating company services the boiler itself.
Buying a house
A Level 2 inspection, about $250–$500, gives you a written report with camera footage before closing. It is a paid service, separate from the free estimate visit.
